The event, held between 14-15 February 2023 at the Railway Historical Park in Budapest, was attended by renowned experts in the field, both nationally and internationally. Organised in part by the National Laboratory of Autonomous Systems, the AI&Aut Expo featured presentations on exciting topics such as self-driving vehicles, industrial automation, robotics, drone technology, machine learning and language technology applications.
The researchers representing the Széchenyi István University (SZE) displayed a test vehicle, which has been gradually adapted to and equipped with various self-driving functions . The researchers also demonstrated a real-time, artificial intelligence-based environment sensing system (ESS) at the stand of the SZE Vehicle Industry Research Centre. The ESS detects vehicles and pedestrians on the road through a camera mounted on the car. Visitors could follow via a screen what the ESS had "seen", i.e., the objects it had detected.
While moving in real traffic, the Lidar sensor on the top of the test vehicle also helps the ESS to determine the real spatial position of the objects, regions detected by the camera. These functions serve as a basis for the self-driving vehicle system.
Representatives of SZE emphasized that the solutions presented at the exhibition not only support academic research, but they do work in real-world applications.
The opening presentation of the Machine Learning and Control Session was given by Ernő Horváth, Head of the Centre for Autonomous Transport Systems at SZE. He spoke about the research on self-driving vehicles at the Centre. He said that even undergraduate students can get involved in SZE's major technological research. He added that the university has several vehicles, robots and drones for the development, research and teaching of autonomous systems, and the ZalaZONE Automotive Test Track provides an excellent testing venue for related innovations.
A longer version of the present account of AI&Aut Expo appears on the SZE website. It presents the topics which attracted great interest, was also quoted by several professional portals (e.g., newtechnology.hu, digitalhungary.hu, gyartastrend.hu, iotmagazin.hu) on their websites.
