Csanád Budai and Tamás Széles, developers of the Systems and Control Laboratory at HUN-REN SZTAKI, competed in Yokohama, Japan at the fifteenth F1TENTH Autonomous Grand Prix, held in the framework of the 2024 IEEE International Conference on Robotics and Automation (ICRA 2024) between 13 and 17 May 2024.
The competition is a regular event organized by an international community of researchers, engineers and autonomous systems professionals, where participating teams build a 1:10 scale autonomous race car according to a given specification and write software for it to meet the goals set in the competition. The theme and the tasks of the competition, as well as the practical experience gained there, are closely linked to ARNL's main research areas.
The race car equipped and automated by the developers of HUN-REN SZTAKI was the only one that used reinforcement learning among those of the other teams in the competition, which means that the algorithm learned to drive the car autonomously, learning from its own experiences and mistakes. The photos taken by the team can be viewed on the official Facebook page of HUN-REN SZTAKI and the short film below was made from their recordings.
