Dr. J. Váncza, the Head of the Research Laboratory on Engineering & Management Intelligence at SZTAKI and a leading figure oft the Autonomous Systems National Laboratory, was awarded the International Dennis Gabor Award – named after the Hungarian-born Nobel laureate Dennis Gabor – at the end of last year, but received the prize only in May this year due to earlier restrictions and measures related to COVID-19.
Dr. Váncza received the Award of the NOVOFER Foundation of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. The Award honours outstanding scientific achievements with practical applications and with a clear positive attitude towards international scientific cooperation. He received his Award for the development of technological applications based on artificial intelligence. More specifically, he received the award in recognition of his work on advanced robotic applications, on intelligent control of technological processes, on smart systems used in energetics, on human-robot interactions and cooperation, on cooperative and sustainable production solutions.
In his speech at the award-giving ceremony Tamás Freund, President of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences said: „The Dennis Gabor Awards are awards given for innovation. Many people see and understand this notion as the realization of an invention. But being researchers we know – since we encounter and see it day by day in our work – that innovation is not a single one-off achievement, but rather a continuous behaviour of humans, especially of researchers. Innovation is a process.”
