ARNL's Lead Researcher, Balázs Németh, who is also the Head of the Engineering Mission at the Budapest University of Technology and Economics, gave a presentation at the conference of the Egervölgy Reformed Diocese in Mezőkövesd on 16 October 2023. In his lecture, he spoke about the ethical aspects of artificial intelligence (AI), including the ethical issues related to the design, use and spread of self-driving vehicles.
The event gave participants the opportunity to learn about the milestones in the development of AI, and to confront the ethical issues - sometimes very difficult to answer - that arise in the design, use and deployment of self-driving vehicles. The speaker then analysed some specific safety issues ‒ related to such vehicles ‒ from an ethical point of view, and stressed that a satisfactory solution to these problems requires novel design and technological approaches in the development of self-driving vehicles.
The main conclusion of the presentation was that the developers and manufacturers of self-driving vehicles need to pay special attention to ethical issues so that this technology benefits society as a whole.
